What Is Royalty Free Music?
Royalty Free Music - also called buyout music - is a specific kind of stock music or production music. But why does production music exist in the first place?

Production Music is a less expensive alternative to the use of popular or well known music in a production. To use a well known piece of popular music you must obtain specific permission or pay additional clearance fees for the use of any song that has instant recognition. It costs so much to use popular music because the use of an artist's song can imply that the artist uses or endorses the product or brand that is being advertised. Obtaining that kind of music use permission can be very costly. And that is where stock music comes into the picture.

The stock music user pays a one-time fee to purchase a physical copy of the music and to purchase its synchronization rights, though he does not actually purchase the music tracks themselves. The synchronization rights allow the user to place the production music tracks he buys in many different productions and to produce copies of those productions for sale or distribution without having to pay any more licensing fees to the music library owner. The stock music tracks must be synchronized within a production such as a multimedia presentation, film, Web site, game, audio-visual production, or a production or commercial for broadcast - the music tracks cannot be sold on to another music user in an unsynchronized format.

In fact, background music is most often produced in specific broadcast lengths (60 seconds, 30 seconds, and stingers - 5 to 15 seconds in length), although longer versions of the compositions can also be made available. Production Music has been specially designed for use in repeated everyday broadcast applications, like commercials, jingles, promotional spots and intros.

As you can see from the wide selection of music genres available from Sound Ideas, stock music is offered in a wide variety of both period and modern genres, styles, moods and tempos - everything from classical orchestrations to animated cartoon compositions.

When production music is used in a broadcast or public performance production, its composers and publishers are entitled to receive performing royalties from performing rights societies like ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, SOCAN, PRS and APRA.
